My new obsession: an English singer Birdy

While surfing the YouTube the other day, I came across Birdy’s video for a song “No Angel” and… I was speechless. She has such a tender, but at the same time very strong voice. I immediately went to listen to her other songs and then I saw the number of views… Seriously? Not again! Btw, her most viewed video has almost 56 million views.

Am I the only one who haven’t heard of her before? Sometimes when I see the number of views on YouTube, I really think I live under a rock. Anyways… if there’s someone who doesn’t know her…

Birdy is a young English musician, songwriter and singer. Her music falls within the folk, indie folk, indie pop, indie rock genre.

When she was barely 12 years old, she won the UK talent contest Open Mic UK, a spinoff of the Live and Unsigned competition. But her real breakthrough happened 3 years later, when she recorded a version of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” as a debut single.

The song can be found, among 9 other covers (such as “The A Team” by Ed Sheeran, “People Help the People” by Cherry Ghost, “White Winter Hymnal” by Fleet Foxes, etc.) and 1 original song (“Without a Word”), on her self-titled debut album, “Birdy”. Album was released in 2011.

Her second studio album, called “Fire Within”, was released last year (in Europe and Oceania, a North American release is apparently planned for 2014) and contains 11 original songs, all co-written by Birdy. When I heard all the songs from the album, I think that I already heard “Wings” and “Light Me Up” before. At least they sound very familiar to me.

Now I obviously have to make up for all the lost time as I listen to her songs on repeat. Pssst, her YouTube channel has 35 videos. I hope that you will join me.
