Queen + Adam Lambert’s concert in Vienna, Austria

I think Queen don’t need a special introduction. And yes, Adam Lambert is that guy from an American Idol (although it has passed quite a few years since then and he has released 2 albums in the meantime + the third album is around the corner, with 1st single out in April).

Since their joint appearance in the show finale of American Idol, I hoped they’d go on tour together… and make a stop in Europe, of course. A few years later my wish finally came true. I went to their concert in Vienna, Austria, this Sunday. And wow, what a show it was!!! I would go back in a heartbeat… or I could go to another concert on this tour. Hm?! As crazy as I’m, I actually checked if they have some concert near… No comment.

They started the concert with the song “One Vision” and continued with hits “Stone Cold Crazy”, “Another One Bites the Dust”, “Fat Bottomed Girls”, “In the Lap of the Gods”, “Seven Seas of Rhye”, “Killer Queen”, “I Want to Break Free”, “Somebody to Love”, “Love of My Life” (which was Brian’s solo), “’39”, “A Kind of Magic” (Roger sang this one), “Under Pressure”, “Save Me”, “Who Wants to Live Forever”, “Tie Your Mother Down”, “I Want It All”, “Radio Ga Ga”, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”. In the latter they used, for the part of the song, a clip from Freddie… and the crowd went crazy. Sometimes I wonder, where they would be now, which records would they break,… if Freddie was still alive.

Roger has enlivened the evening with an interesting drum battle with his son and Brian had a guitar solo. But for me, the highlight of the evening was when Adam shook hands with the crowd (during the song Radio GaGa) and stopped for a few seconds just a few centimeters away from me. I froze. I didn’t dare to touch him. I just watched him, like he’s a Greek God or something. He’s just so incredibly handsome!! (Luckily my boyfriend filmed the whole thing.)

They ended the concert, after more than 2 hours (I think that the whole concert, with 15 minutes of some kind of intro, lasted about 2 and a half hours), with legendary songs “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions”.

This wasn’t my first Queen’s concert. I wish I could have seen them with Freddie but that’s impossible. Nevertheless, I was happy when I got the chance to see them back in 2008, when they were on tour with Paul Rodgers. The concert was great, I have nothing against Paul, but I kind of missed Freddie’s voice back then. This time around… I remained speechless. I’m tempted to write that Adam’s voice is better and stronger than Freddie’s, but it would be unfair to Freddie since he had a very special voice as well and was an amazing frontman. So I prefer to avoid the comparison, as some like to do. I’ll only say that Adam has a really strong voice and an amazing stage presence. I had goosebumps half of the time. Especially when he hit those high notes in “Who Wants To Live Forever”.

And one more thing that I liked… neither Paul nor Adam didn’t imitate Freddie, but they sang songs in their own way.

What do you think of Adam as a singer for Queen? Do you like him or do you think it’s no longer the same without Freddie?

One Response to Queen + Adam Lambert’s concert in Vienna, Austria

I saw two concerts with Adam Lambert and Queen and I was entranced. Adam is the best live singer and performer I have witnessed. I wish I was rich. I would fly all over going to concerts and dropping thousands on the best seats. Adam should be the biggest star in the world. No one will ever be able to imitate Adam’s vocals. I love him.
