My top 10 songs about New York City

New York City has always fascinated me, even though I have never been there (yet). It was exactly the same with London. For years I dreamed about visiting it. I’ve been there twice so far and I like it so much that I’m seriously thinking about moving there. But that’s another story.

From what I’ve seen on TV… I’ve been totally taken over by the energy the New York City has, the buildings, the Central Park, Times Square… I want to go ice-skating at Rockefeller Center… They say it’s the city that never sleeps, where there’s always something going on… what is the exact opposite from the city I live in (which is boring as hell).

Well, apparently I am not the only one who cultivate enthusiasm for the city, since there are a good number (looking at Wikipedia’s list, I’d say more than 1500) of songs dedicated to it. Here are my top 10 songs:

  1. Empire State of Mind – Jay Z & Alicia Keys
is probably my favorite song about the city. I’m not so into rap, but I do love Jay-Z’s music. I remember that when I first heard the song, I had it on repeat for days. YouTube Preview Image
  2. New York, New York – Frank Sinatra
is the most known song about the city. As far as I know, it was written for Liza Minelli, but I prefer Sinatra’s version of the song. YouTube Preview Image
  3. New York State Of Mind – Billy Joel
I’m surprised that this song was never a hit song. I love it so much! YouTube Preview Image
  4. Englishman in New York – Sting
another great song… but with Sting I can be a little biased since I’m a huge fan of his music. YouTube Preview Image
  5. New York – U2
I love U2 and I love their music. This song is no exception. YouTube Preview Image
  6. New York City Serenade – Bruce Springsteen
this song is, believe it or not, exactly 40 years old… but all the songs he makes are timeless, so… you really can’t go wrong with Bruce. YouTube Preview Image
  7. Bells Of New York City – Josh Groban
it sounds like a “love song” to NYC. Love it! And, in general, I love Josh’s voice. I think he has one of the best voices of our generation. YouTube Preview Image
  8. Leaving New York – R.E.M.
another love song to the city. I read that Michael Stipe, the lead singer of the band, once said that flying out of the city and seeing it from above, was overwhelming. He was so fascinated by its beauty that he wrote the song right there on the plane. YouTube Preview Image
  9. Heavens in New York – Wyclef Jean
the song is from the film “One Last Thing”. I love the rhythm of reggae music. You can’t stand still when you are listening to it. YouTube Preview Image
  10. Sunday Morning New York Blue – Rob Thomas
I have to admit that I heard this song  just a few days ago and I loved it immediately. Love the lyrics, love Rob’s voice… love everything about it. YouTube Preview Image

What’s your favorite song about New York City? And speaking of places, which city is your favorite?

Great list! My favorite song about New York City is Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out on Broadway) by Billy Joel. And New York City is my favorite city (although I do love New Orleans, San Francisco, and Boston).

      Thank you!
I have to admit that I haven’t heard that Billy Joel’s song yet.
I’ve never been to those cities but I have a plan to visit them ASAP.
